On Tuesday, 12 May, NSRI volunteers from Station 42 Kleinmond rescued 23 stranded farm workers and their families, including babies, elderly residents and vulnerable individuals, during severe flooding between Worcester and Rawsonville.

As severe weather battered the Western and Eastern Cape this month, NSRI volunteers found themselves navigating swollen rivers, submerged roads and freezing floodwaters to bring stranded families to safety.

NSRI Kleinmond crew were activated following a request for assistance from WC Government Health EMS Metro Rescue and WC DRM (Disaster Risk Management), in cooperation with Overberg DRM, following reports of farm workers trapped on farm building roofs on a farm between Worcester and Rawsonville, along the Old N1 roadway.

On Tuesday, 3 February, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following reports of a commercial crayfishing boat capsized offshore of Draadbaai, Stoney Point Nature Reserve, Betty's Bay.

A teenager is missing at Palmiet Lagoon, and in a separate incident police are appealing for any information that may shed light on an event at Draadbaai in Betty’s Bay, where it is suspected that two men may have been swept off the rocks by waves.

Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Kleinmond station commander, said: At 09h42, Sunday, 7 December, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from Overstrand Law Enforcement officers reporting 2 children, females, age 10 and 11, one from De Doorns and one from Touws River, requiring medical care following a non-fatal drowning accident at Kleinmond Lagoon.

Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Kleinmond station commander, said: At 17h20, Tuesday, 2 December, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following reports of a non-fatal drowning in the vicinity of Main Beach, Kleinmond.

Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Kleinmond station commander, said: At 13h23, Saturday, 29 November, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following reports from a lady at the Palmiet Rest Camp reporting her friend, a male, age 51, from Wellington, had gone missing in the Palmiet Lagoon while swimming with friends.

When Schalk Boonzaaier was four years old, his life’s path revealed itself in the most unexpected way.

Police divers (WPDS - Water Policing and Diving Services) will continue in ongoing search efforts for a local 25 year old male who went missing off a boat near to Hawston Harbour, between Hermanus and Kleinmond, on Friday.

WILDERNESS: Ian Gerber, NSRI Wilderness duty coxswain, said: At 15h38, Friday, 27 June, NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from a local mom reporting her 2 children and their grandfather trapped by the Spring high tide on rocks at Flat Rock, Wilderness.

Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search for a man who went missing in the surf while swimming.

On 4 January, NSRI Kleinmond and emergency teams conducted extensive air, sea, and shoreline searches after reports of a diver in distress near Kleinmond tidal pool; no diver was found, and no missing person reports were received. A separate report of a missing diver at Hangklip was resolved when he returned home safely. Earlier, on 1 January, NSRI Kleinmond rescued a father and daughter swept off their canoe at Jocks Bay, successfully bringing them ashore without injuries.

At 07h35, Sunday, 29 December, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were alerted following eyewitness reports of a body of a man appearing to be washed ashore at Blokbaai, Hangklip.

NSRI, lifeguards, Police and the emergency services have attended to multiple rescue operations over the past weeks, including sadly an increase in drowning accidents around the coastline and on inland waters.

NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were alerted by an eyewitness reporting an adult man on a SUP (stand-up paddle board) appearing to be drifting out to sea and in difficulty at Rooi Els.

Police are investigating a case at the Hermanus old harbour where clothing, a cellphone and other items were discovered on the shore.

NSRI Kleinmond medics and rescue swimmers, Overstrand Fire and Rescue Services, the SA Police Services, and WC Government Health EMS responded to Kleinmond Lagoon to reports from Overstrand Municipality of a drowning in progress in the lagoon. On arrival on the scene it was found the a male bystander Good Samaritan had rescued a local 9 year old male from under water and on bringing the child to the shore the Good Samaritan a lady bystander Good Samaritan had initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts - assisted by other bystanders and they had restored the patients pulse, which was feint and restored spontaneous breathing. NSRI medics and Fire Services continued with medical treatment to the unconscious child and the EMS paramedics arrived to assist. Gradually the child's condition improved during ongoing medical treatment and the child was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a serious but stable condition where doctors and nurses continued with medical care. NSRI has learned that the child has made a full recovery. The bystander Good Samaritans are commended for their efforts that contributed to the child's life being saved. NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated by the Outeniqua Surf Lifesaving lifeguards, conducting volunteer surf lifesaving duties, reporting that they had rescued an 11 year old male from the water at Victoria Bay. NSRI medics and a WC Government Health EMS paramedic responded. On arrival on the scene NSRI medics and the EMS paramedic assisted lifeguards who had the child in their care on the beach at their lifeguard tower. Following medical assessments the child was released in good health requiring no further medical care. The swift response by the lifeguards is commended.

The Western Cape experienced widespread flooding towards the end of September: lives and homes were lost. Here, a few of the NSRI volunteers who participated in the rescue effort reflect on the experience.

STRAND and GORDONS BAY: Early Monday morning, 25 September, NSRI Gordons Bay rescue swimmers, GB Med Sec ambulance services and Police responded to Kays Caravan Park in Strand where multiple residents were evacuated from the caravan park.

This month, Stations 40 (St Lucia), 41 (Ballito), 42 (Kleinmond) and 43 (Port Nolloth) all celebrated five years since they were founded. We caught up with their station commanders to find out how they’re faring.
