Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search for a man who went missing in the surf while swimming.
Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Kleinmond station commander, said: At 12h33, Saturday, 15 February, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated following reports a drowning in progress at Kleinmond Main Beach.
An NSRI rescue craft was dispatched to the scene while NSRI rescue swimmers, WC Government Health EMS, Overstrand Fire and Rescue Services, the SA Police Services (SAPS) and Overstrand Law Enforcement officers responded.
On arrival on the scene, it was determined that a man, aged in his late 20's, from Ceres, reportedly on a work excursion, had been caught in rip currents while swimming.
A Good Samaritan man had reached the casualty man in the surf zone, in rough seas with big wave conditions, during the turn of the Spring low tide, but retreated after being unable to rescue the man, it appears because of the heavy sea conditions.
A WC Government Health EMS Metro Rescue Drone Squad responded.
SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were alerted.
A Metro Rescue drone was deployed to provide an aerial search.
Despite an extensive sea, air and shoreline search there remained no signs of the missing man by last light on Saturday.
SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services are continuing in ongoing search efforts.
Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time.
