At 12h55 on Saturday the 19th of April, NSRI Hermanus volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a sea kayak capsized at Hardebaai, Onrus and two people reported to be in the water.
NSRI Hermanus volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched the sea rescue craft LE JENMAR II and a sea rescue vehicle responded.
On arrival on-scene a double sea kayak was found capsized in a kelp bed. A 57 year old man was found safely ashore but a 23 year old man was missing.
A search commenced for the missing man but the sea rescue craft could not get close enough to do a proper search because of the thick kelp. The WC Government Health EMS activated the Skymed rescue helicopter to respond to join in the search but a short while later the 23 year old arrived on the scene on the land side confirming that he was safe ashore and not injured. He had been swept ashore further down the beach out of sight of his fellow paddler and had then made his way back to the scene.
