Francois Stevens, NSRI Gordons Bay duty coxswain, said: At 05h27 on Sunday the 9th of June Gordons Bay duty crew were called out following a request for assistance from Police who said that a man who had allegedly jumped over the cliff on the R44 coastal road needed to be rescued. Our Gordons Bay duty crew responded and went down the cliff where they found the man, believed to be from Bellville.Gordons Bay volunteers brought him up the cliff to the roadway where Police then took custody of him.According to a local security company the man had apparently been involved in some type of altercation with other motorists at a service station before apparently racing off in his vehicle and then crashing into some parked cars before then fleeing in his vehicle along the coast road with security company responders, Police and Traffic Services giving chase. It appears that his vehicle had then suffered mechanical failure on the coast road and unconfirmed reports are that the man had then jumped off the cliff in an apparent effort to evade capture by the Police. When Gordons Bay rescuers arrived on the scene the man was a few hundred meters down a cliff on the coast road and needing to be rescued. He was brought to safety without incident and Police took him into custody.Gordon Gordon's Bay Sea Rescue base.
