NSRI Station 4 Mykonos is one of the busiest in the country, covering a vast stretch of the West Coast from Elandsbaai to Vondeling, including key water sport hubs, fisheries, yacht clubs and the major harbour in Saldanha. Established in 1970, the station has grown from humble beginnings at the Saldanha Bay Yacht Club to its current base at Club Mykonos marina, with a tight-knit crew committed to regular training and saving lives at sea.
In 2026, the station enters an exciting new chapter with a brand-new base that will house a new offshore rescue craft to strengthen operations along the West Coast, and we are currently recruiting new volunteers in the Langebaan area to join the team.

NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a boat capsized in the surf zone at Spreeuwalle, Paradise Beach, near to Langebaan in Saldanha Bay.
Earlier this month, Rescue 4, a new Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) built for NSRI Station 4, Mykonos, went into the water for her sea trials – the final proving ground before she begins saving lives off the West Coast. Worth R52 million together with her brand-new base, Rescue 4 represents a generational investment in maritime safety. Through the Celebrate a Life campaign, supporters can now be part of every launch.
Earlier this month, the NSRI’s new Mykonos rescue vessel, Rescue 4, went into the water for the first time, marking a major milestone for the station and for the organisation’s Class 1 replacement programme. It is the second-last of the new Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) fleet to be launched, with the final vessel destined for Hout Bay.
It was a year of courage and impact for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). In 2025, thousands of lives were touched, not only in moments of crisis, but through education, training, and the steady presence of volunteers along South Africa’s waterways.
At 05h42 on Wednesday, 1 January, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports from a local fishing charter boat of an unmanned sailing dinghy adrift on Langebaan Lagoon, off Calypso Beach.
Nic Stevens, NSRI Mykonos Station Commander, said: At 17h02 on Thursday, 1 January, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) efforts in progress at Langebaan Main Beach.
Craig McIver, NSRI Mykonos deputy station commander, said: At 15h18, Saturday, 29 November, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Tabakbaai (Danger Bay), Saldanha Bay.
The NSRI fleet is steadily growing stronger as ORCs 7 and 8 move through the final stages of their build, bringing the organisation closer to completing a full renewal of its Class One vessels.
Two of the NSRI’s coastal stations, Mykonos and Hout Bay, are entering an exciting new chapter as work progresses on their new Offshore Rescue Craft (ORCs) and purpose-built rescue bases. These projects form part of the organisation’s long-term plan to renew its Class 1 fleet and upgrade key station infrastructure.

At 15h47, Tuesday, 7 October, NSRI St Helena Bay and NSRI Mykonos duty crews were activated following initial reports indicating that a boat may have capsized at Tietiesbaai, at the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, West Coast.
Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of Graham Howes who was located and recovered at sea sadly deceased during ongoing search efforts on Monday.
Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain station, said: At 16h11, Friday, 15 August, NSRI Mykonos and NSRI St Helena Bay duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of at least one man clinging onto a capsized boat offshore of Shelly Point, West Coast, and where there was suspected to be people in the water at the capsized boat.
DURBAN: 2 fishermen on fishing kayaks have been rescued after getting into difficulties.
Two local fishermen were safely towed to shore by NSRI after their boat broke down in dense fog near Twee Klip; prompt action and accurate location details ensured a swift rescue.
At 18h45, Friday, 12 April, NSRI Lamberts Bay were alerted by Police to a fishing vessel overdue. Family members of 2 local fishermen, age 35 and 31, had alerted Police with concerns that the fishing vessel had not returned as expected.
Craig McGyver, NSRI Mykonos deputy station commander, said: At 14h06, Thursday, 2 January, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports from SA National Parks (SANParks) rangers of a drowning in progress at Tsaarsbank Picnic Site, West Coast National Park, near to Vondeling Island.
Several incidents took place across the Southern Cape including Wilderness, Port Alfred, Storms River and Saldanha Bay.
Manie le Roux, NSRI Richards Bay duty coxswain, said: On Saturday, 15 June, at 12h00, NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a fishing ski-boat capsized offshore of Rooiwalle, Richards Bay, with 3 men onboard, reportedly in the water, 3 nautical miles offshore.
NSRI Mykonos duty crew launched the NSRI Mykonos rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom to rendezvous with a container motor vessel to medically evacuate a seafarer suffering an injury.
NSRI, in cooperation with Police, maritime authorities, DRM (Disaster Risk Management) and the emergency services are appealing to boaters, sailors, paddlers, bathers, anglers and coastal hikers to be aware of a SAWS (South African Weather Services) warning - alerting to rough sea conditions and big waves along the West Coast coastline, Western Cape Coast coastline, South Cape Coast coastline and potentially extending beyond - for the next few days.

At 11h26, Friday, 2 June, NSRI Lamberts Bay duty crew were alerted to Pygmy Sperm whale beached at Lamberts Bay Beach inside of the small breakwater. Also, On Friday, 2 June, NSRI Mykonos duty controllers were informed of 5 surf-skiers launching on a down wind paddle in Saldanha Bay and would be using the NSRI SafeTrx smart phone application during the paddle. This much-needed new station on the West Coast is in the process of launching and looks set to have a fully fledged crew within a year.
