Nic Stevens, NSRI Mykonos station commander, said: At 16h04, Monday, 20 May, NSRI Mykonos and NSRI St Helena Bay duty crews were activated following reports from Shelly Point Security of a boat capsized 1 nautical mile off-shore of Shelly Point, West Coast.
The SA Police Services (SAPS), Police Sea Borderline Control, SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority), West Coast Medical, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance, and an NSRI Mykonos rescue vehicle (carrying NSRI rescue swimmers) responded to join Shelly Point Security officers on the scene.
It has been reported that 4 local fishermen were on the snoek fishing boat when the boat reportedly capsized at the backline breakers.
The NSRI rescue craft Rotary Onwards was launched.
TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) Port of Saldanha Bay Port Control and Telkom Maritime Radio Services weere alerted.
On arrival on the scene 3 men were found on the beach and the casualty craft (an open snoek fishing boat) was found washed ashore on the beach.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts were commenced, by paramedics, on one local adult man, reported to be the skipper.
After all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased by paramedics.
2 survivors, local adult males, were treated on the scene, by paramedics, for non-fatal drowning symptoms and injuries.
One of the survivors was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition. One survivor was not transported to hospital, and he was transported to his home by Police.
A search commenced for one missing man.
Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search there remains no sign of the missing man.
SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services) were activated, and Police divers are continuing in ongoing search efforts for the missing man.
The body of the deceased man has been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Condolences are conveyed to family, friends and colleagues of the deceased man.
Thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the missing man during this difficult time.
Police have opened an Inquest docket.
