Port Edward and Richards Bay – Monday, 11th May. Boat capsized, Port Edward. Patient evacuated off ship, Richards Bay:
PORT EDWARD:
At 08H13 on Monday the 11th of May, NSRI Port Edward duty crew were activated following reports from Tower 13 lifeguards of a boat capsized just off Impenjati.
According to reports two spear fishermen from the boat were in the water spear fishing and the skipper was on the boat when it capsized.
A private boat went to their assistance and NSRI Port Edward dispatched the Discovery Rescue Runner to investigate while crew from NSRI Shelly Beach and a Police Search and Rescue member responded to NSRI Port Edward base to bolster crew strengths and the sea rescue craft WILD COAST SUN RESCUER was launched.
Crew aboard the Discovery Rescue Runner confirmed that no one was injured.
On arrival on-scene the casualty boat had been righted and was under tow by the private boat. NSRI took over the tow and towed the boat to Port Edward.
RICHARDS BAY:
At 08h09 NSRI Richards Bay launched the sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF RICHARDS BAY accompanied by a Netcare 911 paramedic to patient evacuate a 29 year old Filipino sailor, suffering suspected Appendicitis, off the bulk carrier HOUSTON, sailing from Baltimore, USA, to India.
On arrival on-scene, 9 nautical miles off-shore, the sailor was transferred onto the sea rescue craft and brought to shore. He was transported to hospital in a stable condition by a Netcare 911 ambulance.
