At 11h57, Sunday, 18th January, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following reports from family members of two people, a husband and wife, that they were in trouble after capsizing on a canoe off-shore of Greenways, Strand.NSRI Gordons Bay prepared to launch a sea rescue craft while NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene to investigate. Law Enforcement Marine Unit launched a rescue rubber-duck, the SA Police Services, WC Government Health EMS responded and the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicopter were placed on alert.On arrival on-scene it was found that two fishermen, wearing wet suits, had gone into the water to assist the husband and his wife, aged in their 40’s, safely from the water and although not injured the husband has been advised to visit a hospital for observation for secondary drowning as a precautionary measure but they required no further assistance and their canoe was recovered.
