NSRI Gqeberha crew assisted EMS in treating a fisherman who fell ill aboard a Chokka fishing boat off Port Elizabeth last night, ensuring he received urgent medical care and a safe transfer to hospital.
At 20h36 on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following a request for medical assistance to NSRI's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) from a local Chokka fishing boat. A local adult male fisherman on board was reported to be suffering a medical complaint.
Eastern Cape Government Health EMS were activated and responded to the Port of Port Elizabeth, where the fishing vessel was expected to dock.
NSRI Gqeberha crew responded to assist EMS at the Port of Port Elizabeth. It was determined that the fishing vessel was nearing the port at the time.
On arrival on the scene, the fishing vessel docked and NSRI medical crew boarded her, where medical treatment was commenced. NSRI were joined on the scene by EMS paramedics.
The patient was stabilised and transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition, where he is recovering in the care of doctors and nurses. He is expected to make a full recovery.
