In the hope of preventing children from drowning, Eoudia Erasmus, NSRI's Ceres based WaterWise Instructor, is starting a trial of putting 'rescue buoys' in places where children play in water during the summer.'We have the blessing of the farmers on who's property the rivers and dams are, as well as the support of the schools and most importantly the children,' said Eoudia.'With buy in from the community the project is not only educational in that it raises awareness of the dangers of water, but it also re-enforces the emergency number 10177 that we teach children during our WaterWise Academy lessons at schools.'Initially 20 of the rescue buoys, that consist of a pole holding a 3 litre milk container with emergency details printed on them and a length of rope, will be placed in high risk areas and monitored by the children who put them up.Thank you to Pick 'n Pay for sponsoring the milk containers and to CD Fox for sponsoring the rope.WaterWise-9677Eoudia puts up a rescue buoy with with Enrico Makamela,11, and Ryan Johannes,12 of Achtertuin Primary School.
