On Sunday Durban station hosted the induction day for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) students involved in their Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) and the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degrees in Emergency Medical Care. Under a recent agreement, the Durban NSRI station has partnered up with the DUT to assist their students in obtaining training and practical experience in the maritime module of this course. This partnership was kicked off this year with the induction training of the current third year class.
The 28 students were introduced to the SAMSA safety requirements required before being allowed to proceed to sea on an NSRI rescue craft.
This included familiarity with the use of lifejackets, pyrotechnics and the emergency procedures on the craft.
