Over the past weekend five crew from Durban and five from Richards Bay attended the Proficiency in Liferafts course presented at the Unicorn training centre in Durban.The intense two day course was presented by Lancelot Magabeni (Senior Seamanship Instructor), covered everything that the crew needed to know about liferafts. The time was divided up to study the following sections: Introduction to liferafts, Emergency Situations, Survival Equipment, Liferaft construction and stowage, Liferaft launching arrangements, Preparations for abandonment, Abandoning ship, Survival after abandonment, Location aids and Helicopter operations.Attending the course from Durban and Richards Bay were : David Spangenberg, Werner Smit, Paolo Mininchiello, Jaco v.d. Walt, Andrew Hodson, Salim Dadabhay, Roy Wienand, Quinn Kennedy, David Hoffman and Stephen Muller.A big thank you to Lancelot for sharing his knowledge and to the Sea Rescue volunteers for giving up a weekend to learn about liferafts.Pictures and Story by Brynn Gericke.
