Things to remember about EPIRBS:Make sure that it is programed by the seller with the correct MMSI number and that you have the certificate to prove that.The owner must then register it with the MRCC in Cape Town by faxing the supplied form to 021 938 3309 or emailing it to mrcc.ct@samsa.org.zaBefore sending this form in check that the contact details of owner, the primary contact person and the secondary contact person are correct. They will be called if the beacon is activated.Email or fax the MRCC at 021 938 3309 or emailing it to mrcc.ct@samsa.org.za a day or so after sending the form to check that your details have been correctly loaded into the system.Make a calendar note to annually check that the information is still up to date on the MRCC system by emailing or faxing them.Check the battery of the unit and follow the service instructions that come with it.Do not mount the unit inside a cupboard or cabin. It must be easily accessible if the vessel turns over.Make sure that the people who you nominate as primary and secondary contact know that you are at sea, and what your route plan is.
