NSRI Hermanus assists two teenagers after sea kayak capsizes off Hardebaai, Onrus
Neil de Vries, NSRI Hermanus duty coxswain, said: At 10h29 on Wednesday, 8 July, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of two males appearing to be in distress on a sea kayak offshore of Hardebaai, Onrus.
NSRI rescue swimmers responded towards the scene while our duty crew responded to NSRI Hermanus station 17 rescue base to prepare a rescue craft for launch.
When our rescue swimmers arrived on the scene, we found two local male teenagers swimming towards the shore, with their double sea kayak capsized and floating offshore. They reached the rocky shoreline, where our crew assisted them ashore.
Both local teenagers, aged 17, were wearing life jackets. They were a bit cold from the swim but were uninjured and required no medical care. They were taken home by family, where they warmed up.
Their sea kayak drifted ashore and NSRI recovered it and delivered to their home. The family has thanked NSRI for the assistance and for recovering their sea kayak. NSRI has commended the eyewitness for raising the alarm."
