NSRI Wilderness responded, together with Police and emergency services, to a report of a man trapped in the Touw River, Wilderness, in the early hours of Friday, 4 September.
At 02h56, Friday, 4 September, NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from Police, reporting to be on the scene at Touw River, Wilderness, where a man was trapped in the river.
NSRI Wilderness rescue swimmers and Police Divers – Water Policing and Diving Service (WPDS) responded, joining George Fire and Rescue Service, WC Government Health EMS and Police on the scene, finding the man appearing to be lifeless in the water.
Using an NSRI CROC (small floating rescue craft), NSRI rescue swimmers and Police divers reached the man in the river, and the man was recovered to the shoreline by Police divers, assisted by the NSRI rescue swimmers, where paramedics sadly declared the man deceased.
The body of the unidentified adult man was taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
