NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew, while conducting routine training at NSRI Gordons Bay station 9 rescue base, launched the NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski following a request for assistance from the skipper of an open 5 meter fishing craft reporting motor mechanical failure, with 4 crew onboard, 1 nautical mile offshore of Sunbird Cottage, near to Steenbras River Mouth.

Our NSRI rescue vehicle responded to the shore side to get visuals of the casualty craft - arriving on the scene reporting the fishing craft to be about 1.5 nautical miles offshore.

On our rescue craft arrival on the scene we found the 4 crew, a family from Wellington, mom, dad and their 2 teenage sons, safe onboard their craft that appeared to have suffered battery failure following a morning out fishing.

A towline was established and we towed the casualty craft to Gordons Bay Harbour, rafting alongside on arrival at the harbour, and bringing their craft to the slipway where she was recovered without incident and no further assistance was required.

The operation completed at 14h15.
