Tuesday, 7 April, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Strandfontein duty crew were alerted to a suspected drowning in progress at Monwabisi Beach.

NSRI Strandfontein and the City of Cape Town water rescue network were activated, with multiple agencies responding. On arrival, a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Marine Unit officer entered the surf and reached a man in distress, successfully bringing him safely to shore with assistance from local shark spotters.

NSRI crew and paramedics initiated medical treatment for the 23-year-old man, who was showing signs of non-fatal drowning. He was stabilised on scene and transported to hospital in a stable condition.

It is believed the man may have been caught in rip currents while swimming.

NSRI commends the swift, coordinated response of all involved, and especially the efforts of the Law Enforcement officer and shark spotters in saving a life.
