Mark Dawson, NSRI Gqeberha station commander, said: At 14h40, Wednesday, 26 November, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew and CWR (Coastal Water Rescue) were activated following reports to NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) from Police of a drowning in progress at Brighton Beach.

NSRI rescue swimmers, CWR rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, Police WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services) and EC Government Health EMS responded.

The NSRI rescue craft Eddie Beaumont II was launched.

On arrival on the scene an extensive sea and shoreline search commenced for a 17 year old male (believed to be a local) who had gone missing in the surf zone while swimming.

Despite the extensive search there remains no signs of the missing teenager.

Police WPDS are tasked to continue in ongoing search efforts.

Thoughts and care are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time.

An investigation has been opened by Police.
