Jonathan Britton, NSRI Wilderness station commander, said: At 11h08, Monday, 24 November, NSRI Wilderness, and our NSRI satellite station at Sedgefield, duty crews and NSRI lifeguards, as well as the local Sedgefield water safety network, were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Myoli Beach, Sedgefield.

While NSRI crew, NSRI lifeguards and an off duty ER24 paramedic responded an NSRI PRB (Pink Rescue Buoy) volunteer, while checking and servicing the NSRI pink rescue buoys stationed along the shoreline in the area, who had noticed the male teenager caught in rip currents while swimming, grabbed an NSRI pink rescue buoy, that is stationed at Myoli Beach, and launched into the surf to go to the assistance of the teenager, reaching the casualty about 50 to 60 meters offshore at the back breakers, securing the teenager and assisting him to stay afloat using the NSRI pink rescue buoy while gradually guiding him through the surf safely to the shoreline.

Once safely ashore NSRI crew, NSRI lifeguards and the ER24 paramedic, arriving on the scene, checked on the medical status of the 18 year old male casualty, on a post matric holiday, from Centurion, and advice was given to the casualty, his friends and his carer, for him to be seen to by doctors to rule out non-fatal drowning symptoms.

The teenager was checked by a local doctor and released requiring no further assistance.

NSRI has commended the swift response of our NSRI PRB volunteer that, together with the NSRI pink rescue buoy, contributed to saving the teenagers life.

The local Sedgefield community, water safety network, is commended for the swift response.
