NSRI EMERGENCY
OPERATION CENTRE (EOC)

The NSRI is entering an exciting phase in its Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) programme, with Hull 7 scheduled to come out of the mould at the end of February.

Following this milestone, Hull 8 will enter production, continuing the expansion of the NSRI’s advanced rescue fleet.

Mark Hughes, a pivotal figure in the ORC programme, has been overseeing the ongoing development of these state-of-the-art vessels. His leadership ensures that the rigorous standards of quality and performance are upheld, as each ORC is carefully constructed to enhance NSRI’s life saving capabilities.

Hull 7 is currently being built at Two Oceans Marine in Cape Town. The hull and deck are set to be removed from the mould by the end of this month, after which the vessel will be transferred to the factory in Paarden Island for its fit-out. However, this timeline remains flexible and dependent on available space at the facility.

Once Hull 7 is out of the mould, Two Oceans Marine will begin preparations for Hull 8, with production expected to commence by mid-to-late March. Initially planned for completion by the end of this year, the delivery of Hull 8 has been extended to March 2026 due to the current workload at the shipyard.

The ORC construction process

The ORC manufacturing process is meticulous, requiring precision and expertise. Each vessel remains in the mould while key structural components such as beams, ribs, and stringers are installed to provide strength and durability. These components are crafted from high-density marine foam and reinforced with fibreglass and carbon fibre to enhance rigidity and minimise flexing. This stage of production typically takes three to four months for the hull and an additional month for the deck.

Once the deck is installed and bonded to the hull, extensive inspections are conducted by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) before the mould is split and the vessel is removed. The hull and deck are then placed in a purpose-built cradle for the fit-out phase, where engines, gearboxes, piping, and electrical systems are meticulously installed. This phase, which is highly detailed and customised, extends from March through September, with sea trials scheduled for approximately one month before the vessel is delivered to its assigned station.

Future plans and infrastructure development

Hull 7 is destined for Mykonos, where it will be stationed in a brand-new, purpose-built rescue base. This significant investment ensures the vessel remains in top condition, maximising its operational lifespan. NSRI’s long-term strategy focuses on keeping these assets out of the water when not in use, preserving the hull for up to 40 years while allowing for upgrades in engines and electronics over time.

Meanwhile, NSRI’s fundraising initiative, which allows donors to contribute and have names inscribed on the ORCs, continues to gain support. Further details on the blessing ceremony for Hull 6 will be announced in the coming months.
The NSRI’s commitment to excellence and safety remains steadfast, ensuring that these advanced rescue vessels continue to serve and protect South African waters for decades to come.
