On Thursday, 7 November, Prince William spent time with NSRI CEO Mike Vonk and members of the Simon's Town volunteer rescue crew, highlighting his deep connection to rescue and emergency services.

During his recent visit to South Africa for the Earthshot Prize Ceremony, Prince William dedicated his final day in Cape Town to the National Sea Rescue Institute's (NSRI) Simon's Town Sea Rescue Station.

The Prince, who has a distinguished background as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot for the Royal Air Force and later as an air ambulance pilot, brought a unique perspective to his visit. This first-hand experience with search and rescue operations resonated throughout his time at the Simon's Town base. His genuine appreciation for the lifesaving work carried out by the NSRI volunteers was evident from the start.
"Given the Prince's background, he was naturally interested in our rescue operations," Vonk shared. "He was eager to meet our volunteers and understand what they do and why they choose to volunteer."

Prince William's day began with a tour of the rescue base, where he engaged with the dedicated crew members and learned about their daily responsibilities and the various challenges they face. The tour provided an overview of the station's facilities and its critical role in safeguarding South African waters.

The visit reached a highlight as Prince William boarded the 14-metre offshore rescue craft, Donna Nicholas, for a trip from Simon's Town Harbour to Kalk Bay Harbour. Accompanied by the smaller craft, Jack & Irene, the Prince experienced the NSRI's rescue procedures first-hand. He gained a better understanding of the organisation's capabilities.

Prince William's interest extended beyond operational insights. With his foundation's emphasis on community-based initiatives, including the 'Learn to Swim' program, he was keen to discuss the NSRI's survival swimming and water safety programs. "His Royal Highness believes, as we do, that learning to swim is an essential life skill and that every child should be taught to swim," Vonk noted. The Prince's alignment with the NSRI's mission of promoting water safety underscored the shared commitment to preventative measures that save lives.

Reflecting on the visit, Vonk expressed, "It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of the NSRI, and his genuine interest in what our volunteers do was truly special. It was a fantastic visit. You could tell he is a people person—he was sincerely engaged in the work of our volunteers."

The Prince's visit celebrated the bravery and dedication of the NSRI's volunteers. It highlighted the critical importance of water safety and community resilience. His time at Station 10 in Simon's Town reaffirmed the value of global collaboration in fostering safety, education, and community spirit.
