Simon McDonnell. NSRI Simonstown station commander, said: At 11h22, Thursday, 29 February, NSRI Simonstown duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a fisherman, on a fishing sea-kayak, appearing to be in difficulty at Cape Point, near to the shoreline below the Cape Point restaurant.
Our NSRI rescue craft Donna Nicholas was launched.
It was reported that the paddler had abandoned his craft and was attempting to get ashore onto rocks along the shoreline.
On our NSRI rescue craft arriving on the scene the fisherman was located walking up the trail towards the Cape Point restaurant - he indicated that he was okay.
A paddle was located floating in the water and the paddle was recovered from the water.
Following a brief search the man's sea-kayak was located semi-submerged and the casualty craft was recovered onto our NSRI rescue craft.
The casualty craft was brought to our NSRI Simonstown station 10 rescue base where the man later attended to collect his craft and fishing tackle.
He confirmed that while fishing his craft took on water - fortunately he was close to shore where he clambered up rocks to get to safety after abandoning his craft.
He was wearing a life-jacket and NSRI has encouraged the fisherman to download and use the NSRI SafeTrx smart phone application.
NSRI crew assist a local boat, reportedly with motor and electrical failure with 5 local crew onboard.
