The official naming and blessing of the JetRib ‘Spirit of Santam,’ call sign Rescue 16 Alpha, took place at Station 16 Strandfontein on Sunday, the 8th of October 2023.
It was a special occasion as the launch of this vessel was made possible by Santam, who responded to our cry for help after the theft and destruction of the first JetRib that served at Station 16.
It was emotional as NSRI’s Operations Director Brett Ayers handed over the key to this magnificent inshore rescue vessel to Station Commander Nicky Whitehead.
After putting some greenery as a symbol of good luck on the vessel, the blessing, written by Roland Poole, was read by Janet Poole. This was a special moment for Station 16 as Roland and Janet's father, Abraham Poole, was the founding Station Commander of Station 16.
Neptal Khoza represented Santam, and his colleague Cherie Josephs-Dramat completed the naming ceremony by pouring the traditional champagne over the vessel’s pontoon.
Thank you, Santam, for making this day possible.
May the Spirit of Santam serve her community for many years to come.
