Just after 04h00, Sunday, 15 October, NSRI were alerted to a 73 year old fisherman on a fishing boat suffering a medical complaint deep-sea off-shore between Agulhas and Hermanus.
NSRI EOC, NSRI Agulhas duty controllers, NSRI Hermanus duty controllers, WC Government Health EMS Metro Control and an EMS duty doctor assisted MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) in the coordination of a rescue operation.
Marine VHF radio communications were assisted by Telkom Maritime Radio Services.
The fishing vessel proceeded towards Hermanus where a medical evacuation operation was being prepared in cooperation with MRCC.
During the voyage towards Hermanus the crew onboard the fishing vessel reported the man to sadly have passed away.
EMS rescue paramedics were transported to the fishing vessel onboard the NSRI Hermanus rescue craft The Legacy and on arrival at the fishing vessel EMS paramedics declared the man, from Mossel Bay, deceased from a medical condition.
NSRI Hermanus ferried 2 Police detectives to the vessel where the body was recovered, in cooperation with the Police, onto the NSRI rescue craft and he was brought to Hermanus and taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Condolences are conveyed to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased fisherman.
