Simon McDonnell, NSRI Simon's Town station commander, said: At 16h45, Thursday, 21 September, NSRI Simon's Town duty crew were activated following NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) intercepting an NSRI SafeTrx emergency activation from a paddler reporting to be in difficulty near to Roman Rock lighthouse in Simon's Town.
An adult Gauteng man had fallen out of his surf ski, and it appears he was not able to get back onto his surf ski.
Our NSRI duty crew responded to our NSRI Simon's Town rescue station, Station 10, where the NSRI rescue craft Donna Nicholas and Jack & Irene launched.
Visibility was poor with rain and fog.
The casualty was in the water hanging onto his surf ski and wearing a life jacket.
The Casualty and surf ski were safely rescued onboard the Donna Nicholas and rewarming from hypothermia was initiated by NSRI medics.
He was brought safely to shore and reunited with fellow paddlers and no further assistance was required.
NSRI commend the casualty for having the NSRI SafeTrx app downloaded onto his cellphone used to activate the emergency and for wearing high visibility clothing enabling NSRI crew to locate him quickly.
