Jake Manten, NSRI Vaal Dam station commander, said:

At 12h00, Monday, 9 August, NSRI Vaal Dam duty crew were activated following reports of a vehicle that collided with a bridge barrier on the one vehicle roadway Wilgerivier bridge of the R716, Oranjeville, Free State.

The vehicle left the roadway bridge submerging in the Wilgerivier.

Our NSRI rescue vehicle responded towing our NSRI rescue runner to the scene and the SA Police Services, ER24 ambulance services, Free State Provincial Traffic Services, Free State Government Health EMS and Sasolberg Fire and Rescue Services responded.

On arrival on the scene it was determined that a vehicle was submerged in approximately 23 meters depth of water at a section of the one vehicle road bridge of the R716 with damage to the bridge barrier where it appears that the vehicle left the bridge and it is unknown how many persons were in the vehicle when it went through the roadway bridge barrier and submerged in the river.

A Police Dive Unit was activated and Police divers are conducting a dive operation at the site.
