David Rosenberg, NSRI Bakoven deputy station commander, said:At 11h00, Friday, 16 October, NSRI Bakoven duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of 2 people on sea kayaks appearing to be in difficulty off-shore between Bakoven and Oudekraal.NSRI rescue swimmers responded to investigate and found a semi submerged sea kayak about 75 meters off-shore with a man in the water next to the semi submerged sea kayak and a female on a sea kayak attempting to tow the semi submerged sea kayak.NSRI Table Bay and NSRI Hout Bay were placed on alert.I entered the water and assisted the man, age 73 from Cape Town, to get to shore. The lady, believed to be aged in her 50's, from Cape Town, was able to paddle on her sea kayak to Bakoven where an NSRI Bakoven crewman launched a personal sea kayak to rendezvous with the lady and he guided her safely into the Bakoven channel. The man was brought to our sea rescue station at Bakoven and he was treated for lacerations that he sustained when coming ashore over the rocks and following medical treatment he required no further assistance. The lady reached Bakoven safely and her sea kayak was recovered and she was not injured. The NSRI Table Bay sea rescue craft Spirit of Day was launched and on arrival on the scene the semi submerged sea kayak was recovered from the sea about half a nautical mile off-shore between Bakoven and Oudekraal and the casualty sea kayak was brought to the NSRI Bakoven sea rescue station.NSRI commend the eye-witness who raised the alarm and we commend the multiple concerned eye-witnesses who reported the drifting semi submerged sea kayak.
