Andre Fletcher, NSRI Durban station commander, said:At 08h00, Tuesday, 02 July, NSRI Durban launched the sea rescue craft Alick Rennie accompanied by a Metro Police Search and Rescue officer, a Police Search and Rescue officer and a Netcare 911 rescue technician to rendezvous with a bulk carrier 10 nautical miles off Durban’s Port.The bulk carrier had been requested by MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) to divert to assist to rescue the crew and a dog off a yacht that suffered damage and was taking water 242 nautical miles off the South African East coast yesterday morning.Communications during the incident were assisted by Telkom Maritime Radio Services.Arrangements were made for NSRI Durban to launch to rendezvous with the bulk carrier this morning to transfer 2 men, one from Durban and one from Cape Town, their dog, and sadly to recover the body of a British woman, the partner of one the yachtsmen.The 2 men and the dog were not injured in the incident.The crew of the bulk carrier yesterday morning rescued the yachts crew and the dog, and medical staff of the bulk carrier had performed CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts on the woman but sadly, despite the extensive CPR efforts, the woman was declared deceased.NSRI Durban rendezvoused with the bulk carrier this morning and a NSRI crewman, the Metro Police Search and Rescue Officer and the Netcare 911 rescue technician were transferred onto the bulk carrier and assisted the 2 crewmen, the dog, and the body of the woman that was transferred onto the sea rescue craft. They were brought to the NSRI Durban sea rescue station where the body of the woman was taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and the survivors were reunited with family.Sincere Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased.The crew of the bulk carrier are commended for their efforts.TO REPORT A SEA RESCUE EMERGENCY DIAL 112 FROM A CELLPHONE
