Mike Shaw, NSRI Mykonos duty controller, said:
At 17h54, Sunday, 24th June, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports from Langebaan Military of a large floatation buoy spotted floating in the Langebaan Lagoon.
The sea rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 5 was launched and on arrival on the scene a floatation mooring buoy, believed to be for a gas delivery point mooring in the area, that may have broken away and drifted, was located and recovered and we towed the buoy to the Langebaan Military harbour at the island and TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) were arranging to have the buoy collected and re-positioned.
At 15h23, Monday, 25th June, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a kite-boarder in difficulty off-shore of Friday Island.
The sea rescue craft Jacqueline was launched and on arrival on the scene we found a 33 year old male in the water and he was rescued onto our sea rescue craft and brought safely ashore and we treated him at a local restaurant for mild hypothermia and once he was fully recovered he required no further assistance.
It appears that while kite-boarding the wind dropped and he was unable to get the kite airborne, his board washed ashore and he floated with his kite until we reached him.
