At approximately 14h30, Monday, 06 November, NSRI Durban coxswain Paul Bevis, while at his normal day time work in the Port of Durban, overheard VHF communications from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port Control raising the alarm and seeking a harbour boat to go to the assistance of a female worker fallen off a ship in the Port.
The woman, a 46 year old Stevedore, at the loading and off-loading of a ship at berthings inside the Port, had reportedly slipped and fallen from the ships gangplank into the water.
Paul immediately responded to assist and on arrival on the scene found Aqua-Tech Diving Services, who had also been working nearby at the time, had also responded and a Aqua-Tech stand-by diver had deployed into the water and the female had been rescued from the water.
She was brought to the harbour wall by Aqua-Tech Diving Services where Paul assisted in the coordination of medical treatment and Netcare 911 ambulance services have transported the woman to hospital in a stable condition.
