At 19h00 on Friday the 7th of February, NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched their sea rescue craft to rendezvous with the 229 meter bulk carrier ELENI, on a voyage to Singapore, to casualty evacuate a 52 year old Filipino crewman suffering an eye injury. The injury had reportedly been sustained while the crewman had been working in the ships workshop. The ship diverted towards the nearest Port of call, Port Elizabeth, and at 15h00 on the same day, our Port Elizabeth Sea Rescue station were tasked to carry out the casualty evacuation when the ship drew closer to land in the early evening. On arrival on-scene 7 nautical miles off-shore, we took the injured crewman aboard our sea rescue craft and brought him into the Port of Port Elizabeth where a Guardmed ambulance transported the sailor, in a stable condition, to hospital for further treatment.06 - Spirit of Toft
