Hermanus respond to two emergencies

On Friday the 3rd of January at 15h10, NSRI Hermanus were activated for a kayak in trouble off Onrus. One of the crew was driving along Marine drive when he spotted a kayak just beyond the kelp with somebody trying to get back on. A few minutes later he could only see the kayak and not the person. Two other kayakers who were in the vicinity went to assist. Two teenage girls were picked up from the water and brought to safety by the kayakers. Our crew member informed the base that they could stand down as the two teenagers where fine.While this call was taking place, Deon Langenhoven, Deputy Station Commander, received a call from a member of the public in Franskraal at 15h30 regarding another kayak with two people aboard being blown out to see. He contacted their coast watcher in Franskraal and asked him to assess the situation while the crew got ready to tow Hunters Gold Rescuer to Kleinbaai to launch at Kleinbaai harbour. While en route to Kleinbaai NSRI was informed that the two people had managed to row back towards the shore and that they were safe. NSRI Hermanus stood down.
