More than 100 children, teachers and parents from the Lutheran Church attended a WaterWise workshop at the Shelly Beach rescue base on Saturday. The children come from centres all over the country. The duty crew led by Jerry Jackson, assisted by WaterWise educators, Cathy and John Rolt, divided the large group into three smaller groups to ensure that all were trained in the PLAN, HHH, and Bystander CPR protocols as well as how to make and use throw-bags and makeshift throw-bags. The three groups were then rotated so that each group could experience the full WaterWise workshop. Each person in the group was given an opportunity to practise Bystander CPR using the base’s “Little Annie”.Acting Station Commander, Pieter Coetzee, said the importance of the WaterWise programme cannot be over-emphasised. “If this can save the life of a single child, the effort will be well worthwhile. We need to expand this programme in our area in the New Year”, He said.SAM_0436 Cal King and Matthew Strydom explaining and demonstrating Bystander CPR.SAM_0442 Acting Station Commander, Pieter Coetzee, welcomes the group to the rescue base.SAM_0444 John Rolt and Reeve Frost explain the dangers of rip currents before presenting the PLAN, HHH and 10177 protocols.SAM_0447 Hand signals for 10177.SAM_0433 Acting Station Commander, Pieter Coetzee, demonstrating the correct way to use a throw-bag.
