At 19h41 on Saturday the 3rd of August NSRI Vaal Dam volunteers were activated following reports of a man missing on the Vaal dam, in Villiers, approximately 50 km by road from our NSRI base at Manten Marina.Dick Manten, NSRI Vaal Dam station commander, said: 'Our volunteer crew towed HARVEY'S FIBREGLASS to the scene and Midvaal Fire and Rescue Services, ER 24 ambulance service and a SA Police Service dive unit were activated.'Family of the man and his girlfriend, had reported to NSRI that the 43 year old from Kempton Park, Johannesburg, had been out on a hovercraft on the dam on a days pleasure cruise but had failed to return on schedule.'On arrival on-scene the hovercraft was found on the water 2 km from (what we believe to be) their holiday house in Draaifontein, but no sign of the man could be found.'It was then confirmed that an eye-witness had physically seen the man go under water as early as 3 p.m. that afternoon while swimming ashore after his hovercraft had allegedly run out of fuel. Police are going to continue with a dive search on Sunday in an attempt to locate and recover a body.'Midvaal Fire and Rescue Services trauma councilors assisted the family.'UPDATE:The body was recovered by SAPS divers on Sunday.The scene during the search late at night.
