At 18h24 on Saturday the 3rd of August NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority to respond to rendezvous with the 225 meter bulk carrier AMARANTHA, sailing from South America to Singapore, and reporting Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) being conducted on a crew member onboard.Ian Gray, NSRI Port Elizabeth station commander, said: 'The vessel had reported to MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) that a crew member onboard had collapsed and that CPR was in progress, and MRCC instructed the ship to head towards Port Elizabeth while they activated an immediate medical rescue operation.'Our NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched EIKOS RESCUER IV, accompanied by a Relay EMS paramedic, to respond rapidly and our sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF TOFT was also launched.'On arrival on-scene the paramedic and NSRI rescue crew were transferred onto the ship but sadly the 61 year old Filipino crewman was confirmed to be deceased. It appears that the cause of death may have been from a heart attack.'The body of the deceased man has been brought to shore and handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police.Eikos Rescuer IV Eikos Rescuer IV
