Update: Monday 03 December:The Jeffreys Bay Volunteers left the beach at 01h00 last night and started searching again at 05h00 this morning hoping to find the missing boy and bring closure to the family.Sunday 02 December 2012.At 15h53 on Sunday 02 December Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach.Robin Brown, NSRI Jeffreys Bay deputy station commander said that our NSRI Jeffreys Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched LOVED 1s 24:. and a DISCOVERY rescue runner. The SA Police Services, By Law officers (Law Enforcement), Paramedics 24/7 ambulance services, Kouga Fire and Rescue Services and Kouga Municipal Lifeguards also responded. On arrival on-scene a 16 year old girl, from Port Elizabeth, was found on the beach. It appears that she had been rescued from the water by bystanders (it is not confirmed how she was removed from the water) and she was treated by paramedics for symptoms of near drowning. She has been transported to hospital by a Paramedics 24/7 ambulance in a stable condition. She will be under observation for secondary drowning. It was determined also that a 16 year old boy, from Port Elizabeth, had disappeared in the surf and a full scale search operation has revealed no sign of the teenager. A shore and sea search is continuing.According to reports the two 16 year olds were part of a church group on the beach and they were wading in the surf together when a wave 'dumped' onto them causing them to get into difficulty. We believe that bystanders and other members of the church group had managed to rescue the girl from the water but claims are that the 16 year old boy disappeared under water before the bystanders and other church group members could reach him.A Police Dive Unit have been alerted.NSRI will withdraw the sea rescue craft at last light tonight and beach patrols will continue. If no sign of the missing teenager is found today NSRI will launch sea rescue craft again at first light to continue a sea search.Police have opened an inquest docket.Pictures from RRAD Photography are available for media download on Sea Rescue's Flickr page.
