At 08h03 on Tuesday 02 August 2011 NSRI Durban's volunteer duty crew and the emergency services were called out following a boat capsizing in the surf line 150 meters off Virginia Beach.NSRI Durban volunteers responded to the scene directly and we were preparing to launch our sea rescue craft MEGAN II when it was confirmed that all 3 men onboard the capsized boat had managed to get ashore and were safely on the beach.NSRI volunteers, Police Search and Rescue members and Netcare 911 ambulance services arrived on-scene and the 3 men ( a Londoner, a Mozambican and the skipper who is a Durbanite) were found to have sustained minor scrapes but required no medical attention. We assisted them to right their boat which had washed ashore. The boat was capsized by a wave while the men were fishing behind the breaker line. The men had launched at Vetchies, Durban Ski-boat Club, earlier in the day to go fishing.
