Following the heroic rescue of the crew from the capsized yacht Gulliver, the volunteers of Witsand and their neighbouring station at Still Bay have been hard at work to secure an additional radio antennae in order to improve radio communications in that area. Can you image the feeling of the shore crew manning the radio back at the base when they lost comms with their rescue crew, late at night and in stormy seas. When the rescue boat did manage to contact Cape Town Radio to send a relay message to our base at Witsand, all they could hear was 'Send help - we are not going to make it' not realising that they were referring to their fuel supply.

Thank you to Riaan Venter of Omnisolar in George who so generously stepped forward to donate a solar panel and regulator which are required as part of the new antennae installation.

'Die Son-elektriese paneel vir die NSRI radio kommunikasie stelsel sal in die toekoms verhoed dat hulle soos nou onlangs n heldhaftige reddings poging moet aanpak met sporadiese kommunikasie wat die reddings poging baie gevaarlik maak.'
