On the 27th April a teenager was washed off the Kalk Bay harbour wall while fishing. Concerned that this was one more tragedy in a list of similar incidents; Simons Town Station Commander, Darren Zimmerman, and NSRI Marketing Director, Meriel Bartlett, visited the area and appealed to the city and harbour officials for more signage.
There seemed to be a lot of red tape involved so the Sea Rescue volunteers – being who they are – sprung into action to get the job done.NSRI Table Bay volunteer Paula Leech is a desginer by profession and made up signage to alert visitors to the dangers and to publicise the local SEA RESCUE emergency number. NSRI Simons Town volunteer Wolf Weise of Wolf’s Home Maintenance put them up free of charge and arranged for Central Tool Hire to donate the use of a generator at no charge.Permission was granted by the Harbour Office and the signs are now up and will hopefully prevent further tragedy.
