Pilot and co-pilot go through pre-flight checks and load the vessel position into the GPAt approximately 16h00 on Saturday 11 June the NSRI High line team wascalled to assist Titan Helicopters with the evacuation of a Taiwanesechief officer off the Hong Kong registered 58 745 ton bulk carrier Yue Shanbound for Singapore from Brazil with a cargo of iron ore. The sailor issuspected of suffering a mild stroke a day previously and had been partiallyconscious and had experienced difficulty with speech and coordination. Arendezvous was planned for a position approximately 35 miles west of CapeTown and a Bell 212 aircraft was despatched with pilot Louis Venter,co-pilot Janneman Erasmus, engineer Jody Brophy, Sea Rescue swimmerStuart Burgess and Metro rescue paramedic Zane Johnson.A landing on deck was executed after which Stuart and Zane assessed thepatient who was found to have recovered substantially and was able to walkto the aircraft. With all of the necessary documentation completed and thepatient loaded the helicopter took off bound for Cape Town and on arrival atthe Titan Helicopters Container Terminal base the patient was handed over tothe crew of the waiting Netcare ambulance for transfer to Christiaan BarnardMemorial Hospital. After observation and the necessary immediate treatment,the required arrangements would be made for the patient to be flown homeuntil he is again fit to go to sea.
