Sea Rescue – Durban – 07 April, 2011: Yacht assisted by NSRI Durban, and in a separate incident two paddlers assisted by lifeguards:
At 15h03 NSRI Durban volunteers were called out following reports of a yacht in difficulties and requiring assistance 3 nautical miles off Durban.
In a separate incident, at the same time, a call was received for two paddlers, in difficulties in the surf at North Beach.
Sea conditions were 2 to 3 meter breaking swells in rain squalls with rough seas and wind gusting up to 50 knot South Westerly.
NSRI launched Eikos Rescuer II and Megan II, and the SAPS Waterwing launched their boat, to respond to the yacht in trouble.
Lifeguards on duty at North Beach were asked to go to the assistance of the two paddlers, who were both brought safely out of the water.
The yacht Nina, with 7 men on board, had engine failure and had been knocked flat twice by the heavy seas.
A tow-line was rigged from Eikos Rescuer II and the yacht was towed into port where the towline was taken over by Megan II and she was assisted to her moorings.
