At 13:50 on Monday a member of the public called NSRI Station 30, Agulhas, that a dolphin was in trouble on Struisbaai beach.Members from the station were called out and on arrival found a dolphin in the surf, totally disorientated and slightly injured due to a possible strike by a boat propeller.Sea Rescue volunteers assisted by members of the public calmed the dolphin and held her safe in the surf while the station commander consulted with Dr Mike Meyer from MCM. Based on photos MMS’d to Dr Meyer and further information conveyed by cell phone, it was decided that the best course of action will be to transport the dolphin to deeper water and release her there.
IJ Rescuer II , the station’s 4.7m RIB was launched and the dolphin was put on board using a stokes basket. She was then transported to deeper water and released. The dolphin swam away and headed in the direction of where the bigger school of dolphins were spotted.
