On the 9th April 2011 Melkbosstrand NSRI, and on the 16th April, Hout Bay and Bakoven NSRI took part in a basic Sand Driving course presented by Fred Bartens of The Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa.The day started off with theory training at the base, where the technical aspects of a 4x4 was explained as well as a safety briefing.
The practical then took place in the Atlantis sand dunes. The practical included: dune approach, ascents and descents, kinetic strap and non assisted recovery techniques, cambered dune driving techniques and general sand driving.Meals were sponsored at the SANDF Goede Hoop Shooting Range by Geraldine and Michael Bierman of NSRI Station 18, MelkbosstrandThe crew all had a lots of fun and the skills learned from the day will be of great benefit in future rescue calls.
