Port Alfred volunteers helped the Kowie board riders club in cleaning our river, the duckpond, and beaches - as part of International Surfing Day on Sunday 20 June 2010. The idea was to create awareness amongst the public that our wetlands, estuaries, and beaches are always under threat - and that surfing, our great passion, should not always be taken for granted. That we need to realize we are fortunate to be able to surf in relatively clean water (sometimes) and that the reason we have dirty water is not only from sewage issues, but also litter, and all kinds of trash from restaurant grease and lard, to detergents from cars being washed in town, dumping, etc. Even the duckpond is absolutely disgusting. The key point is surfing though - which we all did after the 2 hour clean up - and what a great day it was, perfect weather, great waves and lovely food and coffee from the east beach kiosk...
