At 18h57 on Saturday, 3 October, NSRI Bakoven and NSRI Table Bay duty crews were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Glen Beach, Camps Bay.
NSRI rescue swimmers, CoCT lifeguards, CoCT Law Enforcement, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad, Metro Police, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service and the SA Police Service responded directly to the scene, while the NSRI crew responded to the NSRI Bakoven Station 2 rescue base, where the NSRI rescue craft Gemini Legend was launched.
On arrival on the scene, a search commenced for an 18-year-old male from Mfuleni, Cape Town, who had gone missing in the surf zone.
A Metro Police drone unit, nearby at the time, launched a drone to assist in the search.
It appears the teenager was swimming with friends at Glen Beach when he got into trouble and was swept towards Maidens Cove. A friend had tried to rescue the teenager but, in strong currents, was unable to reach him when he disappeared.
Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search, no signs of the teenager have been located.
Police divers - WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Service) - are continuing in ongoing search efforts.
Police have opened an investigation.
Thoughts and care are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time.
