Norman Rautenbach, NSRI Richards Bay station commander, said: At 15h11, Friday, 26 December, NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at a beach at Mbonombi, Richards Bay.
Our NSRI rescue vehicle, with NSRI rescue swimmers, and the SA Police Services responded.
On arrival on the scene search efforts were conducted for a local male, age 16, who had gone missing in the water after reportedly appearing to be caught in rip currents while swimming.
Despite an extensive search there remains no signs of the missing teenager.
Police Search and Rescue are continuing in ongoing search efforts.
Thoughts and care are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time.
