Nicholas Wood, NSRI Gauteng station commander, said: At 19h22, Sunday, 7 September, NSRI Gauteng duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress on a small holding, in a small dam, in Nigel, Gauteng.
Our NSRI crew responded to our NSRI Gauteng station 27 rescue base.
Our NSRI rescue vehicle accompanied by our NSRI ARC (rescue canoe) was dispatched, with NSRI rescue swimmers, while the SA Police Services, Police Search and Rescue (WPDS - Water Policing and Diving Services) and GEMS (Gauteng Emergency Medical Services) responded.
On arrival on the scene it was confirmed that a local 6 year old male child had gone missing under water while swimming in the dam.
Our NSRI ARC was launched with NSRI rescue swimmers onboard to be used a safety platform.
A Police diver launched into the water to dive search, under the supervision of a surface Police diver.
During a dive search the body of the child was located and recovered by Police divers.
The body of the child was taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an Inquest docket.
Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased child.
