NSRI Table Bay Rescues Myanmar Seafarer from Oil Tanker

Quentin Botha, NSRI Table Bay station commander, said: At 14h00, Sunday, 10 August, NSRI Table Bay duty crew launched the NSRI rescue craft DHL Deliverer and Spirit of Day, accompanied by WC Government Health EMS rescue paramedics and NSRI MEX (Maritime Extrication) crew, on a medical evacuation operation of a male 48 year old Myanmar seafarer suffering a medical condition.

NSRI Table Bay had been placed on alert by MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) on Saturday to prepare for the medical evacuation of the seafarer from a motor vessel oil tanker.

We rendezvoused with the motor vessel 10 nautical offshore of Green Point, in 4 to 5 meter sea swells and calm winds.

An NSRI MEX crewman was transferred onto the motor vessel using our RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) Spirit of Day where our MEX crewman prepared the patient, walking wounded, to be transferred onto the rescue craft.

Secured into a safety line the patient was safely transferred onto Spirit of Day and then transferred from Spirit of Day onto the rescue craft DHL Deliverer and into the care of the EMS rescue paramedics.

An EMS ambulance was activated by EMS Metro Control to stand by at our NSRI Table Bay station 3 rescue base.

In a stable condition the patient was brought to our NSRI rescue base and he was transported to hospital, for further medical care, by EMS ambulance.

NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre), NSRI Table Bay duty controllers, WC Government Health EMS Metro Control and an EMS duty doctor, TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) Port of Table Bay Port Control, the Port Health Authority, Police Sea Borderline Control and Telkom Maritime Radio Services, assisted MRCC in the logistics and coordination of the medical evacuation operation.
