Oceans8: Making Waves for the NSRI and Others in Need

Every June, a different kind of tribute unfolds along Durban’s golden coastline. This tribute takes the form of grit, determination, and countless kilometres swum in the name of charity. We’re talking about the Oceans8 Charity Swim — an inspiring open-water event that’s fast becoming a highlight on South Africa’s fundraising calendar.

Now in its third year, the 2025 edition of the Oceans8 will take place from 14 to 15 June, with 16 June set aside as a contingency day. The event is proudly hosted from the Durban Undersea Club (DUC) and brings together swimmers, supporters, and volunteers for a cause that runs deeper than just sport.

The Swim That Saves Lives

Over the past two years, 487 swimmers have taken to the water, raising a remarkable R1 911 533 for 14 charities. The NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) is honoured to be one of the four main organising charities — and this year, we’re bringing a strong team of 35 swimmers:

30 swimmers will take on the 8-mile challenge

5 brave individuals are attempting the newly introduced 16-mile option

All main charity swimmers commit to raising a minimum of R5 000 each — and as of now, our NSRI team has already raised close to R110 000! These funds directly support our rescue operations, crew training, safety campaigns, and the lifesaving work we do around South Africa’s coastline.

A Race Village With Heart

The Oceans8 isn’t just a swim. It’s a community.

The race village, set up right on the beach, is buzzing with energy. Music plays, commentary rolls in, swimmers huddle with their charities, and supporters cheer them on. DUC opens part of its facilities to welcome the swimmers, while Stations 5 (Durban) and 41 (Ballito) are front and centre, providing safety support in the water and on the beach. These dedicated NSRI volunteers are involved in setup, breakdown, and most importantly — keeping everyone safe.

More Than Just Miles

Oceans8 caters to different fitness levels and fundraising capacities, with 1-mile and 4-mile swims in addition to the headline 8- and 16-mile events. These shorter swims raise funds for 10 invitational charities:

4-mile swimmers pledge to raise R3 000 each

1-mile swimmers commit to R800

Funds raised from these swims are shared among the invited charities — creating an even broader ripple effect of support.

Stories That Inspire

The NSRI is especially proud of the individuals who keep coming back. Trevor Lauf, the oldest participant for the past two years, is returning for his third consecutive Oceans8, once again swimming 8 miles in support of the NSRI. It’s people like Trevor — and our passionate swimmers from Cape Town, Gauteng, and beyond — who remind us why this event matters.

Why It Matters

Every rand raised through Oceans8 goes toward organisations that are changing lives. For the NSRI, that means more training, better equipment, and quicker response times — so we can continue saving lives at sea and on inland waters.
