In response to the tragic drowning of Pierre Lotter, Willem Pretorius, and their three Dachshund dogs at Kids Rock, the NSRI has installed two Pink Rescue Buoys at Kleinbaai, Bloubergstrand.
The NSRI has taken a poignant step in response to a heartbreaking tragedy that unfolded last month at Kids Rock, near Melkbosstrand.
Two men, Pierre Lotter and Willem Pretorius, along with their three beloved Dachshund dogs, tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident.
NSRI has installed two Pink Rescue Buoys on Kids Rock at Kleinbaai, Bloubergstrand to honour their memory and enhance safety. This heartfelt initiative not only commemorates the lives lost but also underscores NSRI's unwavering commitment to preventing future drownings.
On Tuesday, May 14th, Pierre Lotter, a 23-year-old from Kathu, Northern Cape, and Willem Pretorius ventured out to Kids Rock with their three Dachshunds – Ranger, Skyle, and Zia. Unfortunately, they encountered perilous tides, leading to their tragic drowning.
The search operation, spanning several days, saw the collaboration of NSRI, police divers, and various emergency services. Willem’s body was recovered first, and on May 19th, Pierre's body was recovered near Melkbosstrand, bringing a sombre closure to the exhaustive search efforts.
The remains of the three Dachshunds were also recovered. Wanting to provide the family with some form of comfort amid the tragedy, the NSRI, together with the City of Cape Town, The South African Police Services, Emergency Services, Metro Rescue, and Rest in Pets, worked together to arrange a formal cremation for the beloved pets at no cost. The urns were later handed over to the family, who were grateful for the kind and moving gesture.
In the wake of this tragedy, the NSRI swiftly moved to enhance safety measures at Kids Rock by installing two Pink Rescue Buoys. Strategically placed to be visible yet unobtrusive, these buoys serve as a vital lifeline for anyone in distress, emphasising the importance of emergency preparedness.
Hein Köhne, NSRI Melkbosstrand Station Commander, reflected on the impact of the drownings: "These tragic drownings have had a profound impact on our NSRI crew and the family and friends of Pierre and Willem. We trust that by putting Pink Buoys up at Kids Rock, we will remind people of the danger of going out to these rocks and provide emergency aid if someone is caught there in the future."
Brett Ayres, NSRI Operations Director, highlighted the success of the Pink Rescue Buoy project, which has helped rescue 184 people since its inception in 2017. Ayres emphasised the importance of safety awareness, particularly among anglers, urging them to wear life jackets and stay mindful of tide levels.
The local community, emergency services, and countless volunteers came together in an outpouring of support during the search and rescue operations. The family of Pierre and Willem expressed their deep gratitude in a heartfelt message: "We were overwhelmed by the number of people that stopped what they were doing and rushed to help search for our missing son and his beloved dogs. We are forever thankful to every individual who searched for Pierre and did not stop searching."
The family's message conveyed appreciation for all who contributed to the search efforts, acknowledging the tireless dedication of NSRI, police divers, and the broader community. Their words serve as a testament to the collective compassion and solidarity that emerged in the face of this tragedy.
The installation of the Pink Rescue Buoys at Kids Rock stands as a beacon of hope and safety, ensuring that the memory of Pierre, Willem, and their three dogs will continue to inspire vigilance and care.
